In the 1912 United States Census, Pace was a village of fewer than 100 people. The town was a small rural community with one school, a playground, and two small grocery stores. There were many wooded areas and vacant lots. In 1959, Ed and Ruthie Fortune bought a large parcel of land and built a pharmacy in U.S. 90. The town began to grow steadily and was eventually transformed into a fast-growing suburb of Pensacola.
