Pensacola's Harboring History
If you are unfamiliar with Pensacola, Florida, you should know more about the city’s rich harboring history. The Bay in Pensacola was first used as a harbor in 1559, and was revived in 1696. The harbor kept Pensacola alive for four centuries. Its essential value as a harbor and as a place for ships to rest was soon recognized. Later, commercial interests grew, and the bay was the deepest natural harbor on the Gulf Coast.
The Museum of Industry is another great place to learn about the city’s history. This museum is housed in a historic building built for the Pensacola Ice Company in the 1870s. The Museum contains a wide variety of artifacts related to the various industries in the city, including lumber processing tools and the different types of bricks produced in the area. History buffs will appreciate the museum’s unique collection of artifacts and historic architecture.
The museum features many displays about the city’s African-American heritage. Several exhibits are dedicated to the region’s heritage and how it contributed to the city’s development. Visitors can also view artifacts related to the African-American heritage, as well as displays on the history of slavery and civil rights. In 1683, a Canadian explorer, Robert Cavelier de La Salle, sailed from the Mississippi to the Gulf in canoes. In 1684, he returned to France and planted a colony in Texas. In 1686, Spanish investigators searched Pensacola Bay for Frenchmen but came up empty-handed. A few days later, they found two French wrecks.
