Pensacola Nature Preserve
If you’re visiting the Gulf Coast area, you might want to take the time to visit Pensacola Nature Preserve. The preserve features many hiking trails, and the MWR Community Recreation and Fitness department maintain nature trails for the community. They are an excellent way to enjoy the outdoors and get in shape while enjoying a scenic walk or jog. For a leisurely walk, you can start with the Sunec’ke trail, a 0.7-mile loop, which will take you to the pavilion outlook and provides panoramic views of Bayou Grande. There are many trails in the preserve, including one that is accessed from Battery Langdon, a massive cement structure that was built in 1923. The trail winds through a wetland and bayou, with plenty of wild rosemary and prickly pear cactus to see. You can end your walk at the Pensacola Bay. Another one of the park’s trails is the 1.7-mile Garcon Point Trail. This trail winds through a pine forest and prairie grasses, and passes carnivorous white-top pitcher plants and blooming sundews. You’ll even come across a spur trail that connects to the main loop. If you’d like to go hiking around the whole preserve, you can even make a lollipop loop.
